Spongia agaricina Pallas, 1766 has been reported by several authors, and is considered one of the larger Mediterranean sponges. Its vase/fan-shaped growth form represents a diagnostic trait at the species level, and it is perfectly adapted to its life-style and habitat ( Pronzato et al. 1998a ).
Spongia officinalis Linnaeus, 1789 species no. 8 of 50 listed and synthetically described as ‘foraminulata, difformibus subramosa, tenax, tomentosa’. Habitat: Mediterranean Sea. The Linnaean descriptions of S. officinalis as above reported are short but precise.
Colour in life is dark grey. The genera Spongia and Hippospongia commonly recorded world-wide are considered to be cosmopolitan. Over 100 valid species have presently been assigned to the genus Spongia, but the value of this species richness must be considered with caution in the absence of any in-depth taxonomic revision.
