    Myoxocephalus is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Cottidae, the typical sculpins. They are found in the northern Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, with a few species in lakes. Myoxocephalus was first proposed as a monospecific genus in 1811 by Tilesius when he described Myoxocephalus stelleri from Kamchatka.
    Etymology: Myoxocephalus: Greek, myos = muscle, and also, mouse + Greek, kephale = head (Ref. 45335). More on author: Linnaeus . Marine; brackish; demersal; depth range 0 - 451 m (Ref. 58496 ). Polar; 80°N - 40°N, 95°W - 60°E
    It is a mottled grey-brown in colour but can be darker, including black as base colouring. It has a large mouth and spiny gill covers. The shorthorn sculpin is not venomous, but it can be mistaken for similar looking venomous fishes, notably scorpionfish.
