Acanthopleura granulata, common name the West Indian fuzzy chiton (also known as Curbs or Sea Cradles), is a medium-sized tropical species of chiton. This type of chiton's activity does not depend on spring-neap oscillations leading to lower locomotion loss. Its morphology is different from usual … Meer weergeven

The chiton Acanthopleura granulata, for example, has hundreds of small eyes (∼80 μm in diameter) embedded within its shell plates (Speiser et al., 2011). Each eye has a retina of ∼100 photoreceptors, a layer of screening pigment and an image-forming lens made of aragonite (Speiser et al., 2011 (Speiser et al., , 2014 Li et al., 2015).
The A. granulata genome is a resource for future studies of molluscan evolution and biomineralization. Chitons are molluscs that make shell plates, spine- or scale-like sclerites, and iron-coated teeth. Currently, all molluscs with sequenced genomes lie within one major clade (Conchifera).

( a) The locations of the transcription initiation sites and exons of isoform 1 of ferritin (orange, above) and isoform 2 of ferritin (blue, below). A 5′ IRE (red) is present in the 5′ UTR of isoform 1, but not in isoform 2.
These retinas, described in detail for Acanthopleura granulata (Speiser et al. 2011) and Onithochiton neglectus (Boyle 1969b ), are composed of ~100 photoreceptors that project bundles of microvilli ~8μm long and sometimes cilia as well.
