    Palinurus elephas and Palinurus mauritanicus are the only species of the family Palinuridae that occur in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. Of the two, Palinurus elephas is the most abundant and accessible and has traditionally been the preferred target of lobster fisheries throughout its range.
    Palinurus mauritanicus has been less the preferred target of lobster fisheries because of its relative scarcity, due to its deeper distribution. Its main fishing range is in the eastern central Atlantic off Mauritania. Its high unit value has led to depletion in the eastern central Atlantic.
    Palinurus mauritanicus and Palinurus elephas, are the only species of the family Palinuridae that occur both in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is found on muddy or rocky bottoms at the edge of the continental shelf, but, off Europe in waters deeper than 200 m.
    Two pueruli of Palinurus mauritanicus were obtained by demersal trawling on muddy bottoms of the continental slope off Catalonia in the western Mediterranean (Specimen A: 41 ∘ 54.7 ′ N, 3 ∘ 30.8 ′ E; 409 - 452 m depth ; 29 May 2004; trawl number MEDITS_ES_04 L107.
