Morphological and molecular characterization of Aspidisca hongkongensis spec. nov. (Ciliophora, Euplotida) from the South China Sea Morphological investigation on some free living ciliates (Protozoa, Ciliophora) from China sea with description of a new hypotrichous genus, Hemigastrostyla nov. gen.
Improved diagnoses and morphometric data are provided for both species. Aspidisca fusca is characterized by having a peristomial spur, seven frontoventral cirri in a โ€œpolystyla-arrangementโ€, and two oval macronuclear nodules.
Samples are collected from inter-tidal zone. Aspidisca fusca was collected on June 5, 2008, from the sandy beach (36°03โ€ฒ39โ€ณN, 120°19โ€ฒ16โ€ณE) with a sewage outfall, near Zhanqiao Peir in Qingdao at a water temperature of 22 °C and salinity 28โ€ฐ.
Aspidisca steini (Buddenbrock, 1920) Kahl, 1932 and A. aculeata (Ehrenberg, 1838) Kahl, 1932 show a close relationship with A. fusca in our phylogenetic trees based on SSU rRNA gene sequences ( Fig. 5 ).
