Euphausia distinguenda is a strong vertical migrant between the shallow oxygenated layer at night and the core of the OMZ during daytime, crossing a wide temperature range (approximately 10–15°C, Brinton, 1979; Lavaniegos, 1996; Antezana, 2009; Ambriz-Arreola et al., 2012 ).
In fact, E. distinguenda is omnivorous, similar to other euphausiid species ( Euphausia vallentini: Gurney et al., 2001; Euphausia hanseni and Nematoscelis megalops: Barange et al., 1991 ).
These studies have shown that several euphausiid species migrate to the shallow oxycline, while others migrate intensively into the core of the OMZ, such as Euphausia mucronata, Euphausia eximia, Euphausia tenera and Euphausia distinguenda ( Antezana, 2009 ).
Euphausia distinguenda was the most abundant euphausiid species in the sampled area as observed in previous studies by Brinton and Townsend (1980) and Ambriz-Arreola et al. (2012, 2017 ).
