The taxonomy of one of the most common intertidal Indo-West Pacifi c xanthid crab species, Leptodius exaratus (H. Milne Edwards, 1834) has generally been regarded as stable and most recent syntheses do not question its identity (e.g., Serène, 1984).
Leptodius exaratus s. str. is found in the Western Indian Ocean, ranging from the eastern and southern coasts of Africa, including Madagascar, to the western coast of India; and also in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.
The xanthid Leptodius exaratus (H. Milne Edwards, 1834) inhabits tropical and subtropical rocky shores across the western Indo-West Pacific ( Lee et al., 2013) including the Persian Gulf ( Naderloo & Türkay, 2012; Afkhami et al., 2016; Naderloo, 2017 ).
The genus Leptodius A. Milne-Edwards, 1863, has 12 recognised species, all of which are found in the Indo-West Pacific region, where they are often common and ubiquitous components of the intertidal and shallow subtidal fauna (Serène, 1968, 1984; Ng et al., 2008).
