Calappa calappa, also known as the smooth box crab or red-spotted box crab, is a tropical marine species of crab with an Indo-Pacific distribution, and showing great variability in its patterning and colouration.
The use of molecular data in combination with morphometrics suggests that the crabs in question belonged to Calappa flammea (Herbst, 1794). The specimens represent an undescribed unique color morph that deviates from their previous description and should be considered for future identifications.
Calappa is a genus of crabs known commonly as box crabs or shame-faced crabs. The name box crab comes from their distinctly bulky carapace, and the name shame-faced is from anthropomorphising the way the crab's chelae (claws) fold up and cover its face, as if it were hiding its face in shame. There are 43 extant species in the genus:
There were no specimens identified as a Calappa “sp. E” in the FWRI collection ( N = 56) having a carapace length greater than 45.20 mm. The mean carapace length was 20.89 mm ± 0.847 mm (mean ± standard deviation), whereas C. flammea is known to grow to at least 106 mm in carapace length ( Holthuis, 1958; FWRI museum collection).
