Lytechinus variegatus represents a dominant species in many of the seagrass meadows throughout these regions. As a ruderal species, L. variegatus has rapid growth, early reproductive maturity, and short longevity. These characteristics make L. variegatus a potential candidate for fisheries and/or aquaculture.
Lytechinus variegatus belongs to the Camarodonta, a large clade of primarily shallow-water sea urchins whose crown group dates to ∼100 Ma ( Smith 2005) and includes several other species widely studied by ecologists, developmental biologists, and evolutionary biologists.
For example, in the central gulf coast of Florida A. punctulata consumes mainly animals while Lytechinus variegatus depletes the algal resources ( Cobb and Lawrence, 2005 ). Moreover, both species may occupy different microhabitats, with A. punctulata abundant on hard substrata and L. variegatus usually abundant on sand ( Hill and Lawrence, 2003 ).
HABITAT AND ACTIVITY. It is a tropical species that inhabits calm, clear and shallow waters. L. variegatus is intolerant of polluted and sedimented water. It is not typically found in water deeper than 50m. Commonly found on seagrass or algae beds, sandy or reef sea bottoms and sometimes rock.
