Mastigoteuthis psychrophila is a species of whip-lash squid. It was first described by Kir Nazimovich Nesis in 1977, based on four individuals found in Antarctic waters. The largest was 143 mm long. The squid's tentacles are 15 mm in diameter, with 0.15 mm diameter club suckers. Integumental photophores are present upon the head, arms and fins.
The Mastigoteuthis species occur throughout much of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. At present we are confident of the separate species status of only two species: M. agassizii and M. psychrophila.

Local mastigoteuthid species can be distinguished based on photophore location, size, and patterns. Eye photophores are found in two forms in mastigoteuthids: hemispherical ( Mp. hjorti, I. okutanii, fide Salcedo-Vargas 1997) and a photogenic patch ( I. cordiformis ).
