The classification of Prorocentrum species has been based on cell shape and size, thecal plate surface morphology (ornamentation and pore patterns), intercalary band morphology, and architectural details of the periflagellar area (number of platelets, spines, collars, and protrusions).
The most basal species and sister to the other species of Prorocentrum was found to be Prorocentrum compressum, with moderate support (0.89/76, Fig. 18 ). Prorocentrum clipeus was found to be the next species to diverge, however support was low.
Protrusion: Thecal projection longer than wide or as long as wide, no or only slight narrowing, protruding from a platelet ( Fig. 9 g, h and j) (in the LM sometimes visible as “spine”, e.g. Prorocentrum clipeus and Prorocentrum tsawwassenense ).
Prorocentrum bimaculatum has two areas on both sides of the centre of the thecal plates without pores. Rows or lines of pores can be arranged radial and perpendicular to the periphery (e.g. P. emarginatum, P. rhathymum ). A marginal row of pores or areolae can be present (e.g. P. lima, P. consutum ).
