According to material examined, Squatina argentina is distributed from Santa Catarina state in Brazil to southern Uruguay. The type-locality, however, is off northern Ar gentina (39 S, 56W; Fig.40) (also Gomes et al ., 2010). V ooren and Klippel (2005) proposed that this species occurs of f Rio de Janeiro state; however, this was not confirmed.
Etymology: Squatina: Latin for skate, which angel sharks superficially resemble, presumably tautonymous with Squalus squatina Linnaeus 1758 (no species mentioned). ( See ETYFish); argentina: Presumably named for Argentina, described from off the coast of Buenos Aires (the province, not the city). ( See ETYFish).
Additionally, an unidentified specimen is reported, as Squatina sp., from the continental shelf of Bahia state, Brazil, recognized by having more vertebral centra and a conspicuous dermal denticle morphology on interspiracular region, features not present in other South America angelshark species.
