All are relatively small, with the largest species reaching just 1.65 metres (5.5 ft) in maximum length. They are bottom feeders in tropical and subtropical waters. The Heterodontiforms appear in the fossil record in the Early Jurassic.
Heterodontiforms have two dorsal fins, with fin spines, as well as an anal fin. The dorsal and anal fins also contain basal cartilages, not just fin rays.
All heterodontoids share the following characteristics: range restricted to Pacific coasts of North and South America, from Southern California and Baja to Columbia and perhaps Ecuador Size: average length 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 centimetres), maximum 4 feet (1.2 metres) Habitat: Intertidal, Sandy Plains, Rocky Reefs, Kelp Forests
Heterodontus ramalheira is unique in having a reddish-brown background with creamy-white, minute spots. Heterodontus japonicus and H. galeatus have dark saddlelike markings on their dorsal surfaces (and also over the eyes and underneath the first dorsal fin in the latter species), both with lighter background colors.
