Given the sophistication and subtlety of their social lives, it is little wonder that carcharhinids and sphyrnids typically possess relatively large and complex brains. In the Sea of Cortez, the Scalloped Hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) forms polarized schools of up to 500 individuals.
Abundance trend analyses of catch-rate data for the hammerhead complex of Sphyrna mokarran, including Sphyrna lewini and Sphyrna zygaena, have reported large declines, ranging from 60-99% over recent years.
This problem, driven by the high economic value of its large dorsal fins has led to the species being overfished during all stages of its lifecycle. Sphyrna mokarran is a costal-pelagic and semi-oceanic shark species native to coastal warm temperate and tropical seas.
For many years, though, the valid scientific name for the great hammerhead was thought to be Sphyrna tudes, which was coined in 1822 by Achille Valenciennes. In 1950, Enrico Tortonese determined that the specimens illustrated by Valenciennes were in fact smalleye hammerheads, to which the name S. tudes then applied.
