    Veneridae - Wikipedia

The Veneridae or venerids, common name: Venus clams, are a very large family of minute to large, saltwater clams, marine bivalve molluscs. Diversity: There are 768 recognized living species of Veneridae and 107 genera ( WoRMS database, unvetted). The Paleobiology Database recognizes 151 fossil genera and 1809 fossil species of Veneridae (unvetted). Paleoecology: The Veneridae encompass species with several different life modes, but all are suspension feeders.
The Veneridae can be found worldwide, mostly at temperate to tropical latitudes. Source: Mikkelsen and Bieler (2008). Phylogenetic status: Monophyletic. The molecular phylogenetic analysis by Mikkelsen et al. (2006) supports the monophyly of Family Veneridae.
Veneridae is usually distinguished by a single rather generalized hinge character - the presence of three cardinal teeth in each valve - with all other shell characters (of lateral teeth, pallial sinus, lunule, escutcheon, sculpture) varying greatly ( Keen, 1969; see below).
Venerids make up a significant proportion of the world fishery of edible bivalves. The family includes some species that are important commercially, such as (in the USA) the hard clam or quahog, Mercenaria mercenaria . The classification within the family Veneridae has been controversial at least since the 1930s.
