    Orbiniida - Wikipedia

Orbiniida is an order of small polychaete worms in the phylum Annelida. It is the earliest diverging clade in Sedentaria. Along with Protodriliformia (in Errantia), this order is composed of meiofaunal marine worms formerly known as "archiannelids". These worms inhabit the marine interstitial ecosystem, the space … See more

First mentioned in 1977, Orbiniida was an order of the polyphyletic infraclass "Scolecida" of the class "Polychaeta". It was composed of the families Orbiniidae, Paraonidae and Questidae, all of which share in common … See more

Phylogenetic analysis of annelids has found Orbiniida to be the earliest diverging clade of Sedentaria. At the same time, the other half of "archiannelid" worms, Protodriliformia, … See more

Orbiniids are mostly unselective deposit feederson marine detritus. They can be found from the neritic zoneto abyssal depths. The family was revised in 1957 by Hartman and some further revisions were made by Blake in 2000. The Orbiniidae comprise a group of deposit-feeding polychaetes, with a world-wide distribution. Approximately 150 species have been described in 18 genera ( Glasby, 2000). The taxonomic history of the taxon was extensively reviewed by Hartman (1957), who established the classification of orbiniid worms in Protoariciinae and Orbiniinae.
Development and larval morphology are only known for a few orbiniid species: Phylo foetida was described by Eisig (1914), Scoloplos armiger and S. simplex (in this paper referred to as Haploscoloplos fragilis) by Anderson (1959, 1961 ), and Leitoscoloplos pugettensis and S. acmeceps by Blake (1980).
The genera involved ( Leitoscoloplos, Naineris, Orbinia, Phylo and Scoloplos) are the most species-rich taxa in the Orbiniidae. Leitoscoloplos was reviewed by Mackie (1987), who distinguished five morphological groups and posited a possible polyphyletic origin of species referred to this taxon.
