The Pocilloporidae are a family of stony corals in the order Scleractinia occurring in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Pocilloporids are colonial and most species are reef-building. They are very variable in size and shape, some being submassive and others arborescent or ramose.
The Pocilloporidae are closely related to the other coral families, Astrocoeniidae and Acroporidae. The genera in this family are polymorphic, differing in growth form according to their habitat, but showing similar growth forms in response to light availability and wave action. The colonies are hermaphrodites.
Here, we focus on the family Pocilloporidae Gray, 1840 and the three extant related genera that have been, at some time, recorded in Singapore: Pocillopora Lamarck, 1816; Seriatopora Lamarck, 1816; and Stylophora Schweigger, 1820.
Nevertheless, 16 or more genetic lineages of Pocillopora have been considered as putative species based on haplotypes of a mitochondrial DNA region 10, 12, 15 and genetic structure analyzed using microsatellite markers 10, 15. Approximately 400 reef-building coral species inhabit the Ryukyu Archipelago 16, Japan.
