The spotted moray (Gymnothorax moringa) is a medium to large moray eel. Other common names include conger, spotted eel, red moray, speckled moray, white cong, white jawed moray, white-chinned moray and white-jawed moray eel.

The spotted moray (Gymnothorax moringa) is one of the most abundant moray species in the western Atlantic Ocean (Böhlke et al., 1989). It ranges from North Carolina south through the West Indies to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the islands of Bermuda, St. Helena, and Ascension (Smith, 1976; Böhlke et al., 1989).

Gymnothorax moringa is a benthic species often present in the ravines of the reefs and in rocky zones where it lives, solitary, mainly in shallow waters, not deeper than 35 m, even if it has been sighted at 200 m and some talk of 300 m. It frequents the phanerogams beds but avoids the unclear waters of the harbours and of the bays.

Spotted Moray Eel (Gymnothorax moringa) can be very interesting creatures and are like “living fossils” due to a lack of scales and a boney figure. They are truly gorgeous, colorful creatures that have rightfully earned their place in the coral reef environment.
