Lophelia - Wikipedia
Lophelia is een geslacht van steenkoralen uit de familie Caryophylliidae. De wetenschappelijke naam van het geslacht werd in 1849 voorgesteld door Henri Milne-Edwards en Jules Haime. Als typesoort wezen ze Madrepora prolifera Pallas, 1766 aan, een naam die nu gereduceerd is tot een synoniem van Madrepora pertusa Linnaeus, 1758.

WEBLophelia coral reefs of this size may be tens of thousands of years old. Individual living lophelia colonies are extremely slow growing and are known to live for more than 1000 years. This species is commonly found down to depths of approximately 3300 feet (1000 m), but it has been observed or collected from depths of nearly 10,000 feet (3000 m).
