Introduction The family Ommastrephidae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) includes many commercially important species, distributing around the world.
Ommastrephinae is a subfamily of squids under the family Ommastrephidae . Ommastrephinae includes the largest species of squids belonging to the family Ommastrephidae, Humboldt squid ( Dosidicus gigas) which can grow to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in mantle length (ML).
This analysis was performed using a robust molecular phylogeny with three mitochondrial genes (COI, CYTB and 16S) and two nuclear genes (RHO and 18S) for nearly all species of ommastrephid squid. Our results support dividing the Ommastrephidae into the three traditional subfamilies, plus the monotypic subfamily Todaropsinae as proposed previously.
Ommastrephidae was first established by the Danish zoologist Japetus Steenstrup in 1857. It is classified under the suborder Oegopsina of the order Teuthida (squids). It is divided into three subfamilies – Illicinae, Ommastrephinae, and Todarodinae; further subdivided into 11 genera and more than 20 species.
North Atlantic Ommastrephes have larger spermatophores (≤ 53 mm, whereas other Ommastrephes species have a maximal length of 41 mm), which are distinguished from those of other species by the morphology of the cement body, sperm reservoir and posterior empty part ( Nigmatullin et al., 2003; Sabirov & Nigmatullin, 2012 ).
According to different authors, the sibling genus of Ommastrephes might be either D. gigas or Sthenoteuthis spp. ( Lindgren et al., 2012; Strugnell et al., 2017; Pardo-Gandarillas et al., 2018 ). Uncorrected p -distances of both COI and 16S show a closer relationship between Ommastrephes and D. gigas (F.Á.F.-Á., pers. obs.).

Ommastrephidae is a family of squid containing three subfamilies, 11 genera, and over 20 species. They are widely distributed globally and are extensively fished for food. One species, Todarodes pacificus, comprised around half of the world's cephalopod catch annually. Some members of … Afficher plus

The ommastrephids are small to large squids, with mantle lengths ranging from that of the glass squid (Hyaloteuthis pelagica) at 9 cm (3.5 in), to the Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) at 1.5 m (4.9 ft). The mantle … Afficher plus
