The Pocilloporidae are a family of stony corals in the order Scleractinia occurring in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Pocilloporids are colonial and most species are reef-building. They are very variable in size and shape, some being submassive and others arborescent or ramose.
Pocillopora verrucosa, like many corals, contains microscopic symbiotic dinoflagellate algae ( zooxanthellae) living within its tissues. Through photosynthesis, these algae produce energy-rich molecules that the coral can assimilate. It has been found that these algae are already present in the eggs before spawning.
However, brooding pocilloporid corals release planulae every month and previous coral recruitment studies in Singapore (Dikou and van Woesik 2006; Bauman et al. 2015) have consistently recorded a high abundance of pocilloporid coral spats. Coral larvae can also be harmed by suspended sediments (Gilmour 1999 ).
