The Chinese population of Aspidisca lynceus closely resembles previously described populations. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from SSU rDNA sequences show that E. platystoma is closely related with E. neapolitanus, and the internal position of A. lynceus within this genus is still not robust.
Taxonomic backgroud; Ehrenberg established the genus Aspidisca in 1830 using A. lynceus (Muller, 1773) as the type species. A second species, A. turrita (Ehrenberg, 1838) Claparede and Lachmann 1858, closely resembles A. lynceus in size, shape, and ciliature except for the possession of a dorsal thorn-like structure.
According to Wu and Curds (1979), eight features, i.e., habitat, size, shape, dorsal rib and thorn, adoral zone of membranelles, nuclear features, dorsal argyrome, and arrangement of frontoventral cirri, are the most important characters to distinguish different species of Aspidisca.
