Balistes vetula These colorful, oval-shaped fish are popular aquarium attractions. They can dart into crevasses when threatened, and lock their dorsal fin in place to prevent predators from pulling them out. They also can produce an audible warning from special membranes, warning other fish to keep away.
Synonyms referring to this species in past scientific literature include Balistes bellum Walbaum 1792, Balistes equestris Gronow 1854, and Balistes vetula trinitatus Nichols & Murphy 1914. Prepared by: Cathleen Bester
Our work indicates that previously reported maximum ages for Balistes species based on spine-derived age estimates may underestimate longevity of these species since queen triggerfish otolith-based ageing extended maximum known age for the species by nearly three-fold (14 y from spines versus 40 y from otoliths).
The name of the genus Balistes comes from the “balista”, crossbow, with reference to this weapon due to the arcuate shape of the fins and the trigger, ready to spring, the fish has on the back.
