The Balaenopteridae is most speciose, with eight species in two genera. Balaenoptera species vary in size, distribution, behavior, and especially aspects of the feeding apparatus (baleen size and spacing, size and shape of the upper jaw). Skeletal differences are rather minor, and disparity appears low.
The family name Balaenopteridae is from the type genus, Balaenoptera . All members of the family have a series of longitudinal folds of skin running from below the mouth back to the navel (except the sei whale and common minke whale, which have shorter grooves). These furrows allow the mouth to expand immensely when feeding.

† Balaenoptera cephalus was originally thought to be a species of Eschrichtius (gray whales) or Cetotherium, but more recent analysis shows it to be a member of Balaenoptera. Fossils of the species were found in the Calvert Formation of Maryland.
