    Initially described as Millepora damicornis by Linné (1758), the species was placed in the genus Madrepora by Pallas (1766), and subsequently into Pocillopora by Lamarck (1816). The genus Pocillopora was erected by Lamarck based on Pocillopora acuta, a taxon later synonymized under P. damicornis ( Veron & Pichon, 1976 ).
