Salmo trutta fario, sometimes called the river trout, is a river -dwelling freshwater predatory fish from the genus Salmo of the family Salmonidae. It is one of the three main subspecies or morphs of the brown trout (Salmo trutta), besides sea trout (Salmo trutta trutta) and the lacustrine trout (Salmo trutta lacustris).

Considerata a lungo come una sottospecie della S. trutta o addirittura come una specie a sé stante, la trota fario non è considerata differente da altri morfismi della Salmo trutta. Si ritrova tipicamente nella parte superiore dei fiumi, con acque limpide, ben ossigenate e con una temperatura che non superi mai i 25 gradi.
