In Pterogorgia citrina the cross-sections of branches are generally ribbon shaped. Colonies are small, rarely more than 30 cm tall and are commonly yellowish or orange. Polyps emerge conspicuously from the edges of the blades, from individual apertures rather than from a common groove as is the case with P. guadaloupensis.
