Molecular genetic investigations of the highly abundant extant planktonic foraminifera plexus Globigerinella siphonifera / Globigerinella calida have recently shown this group to be the genetically most diverse one within planktonic foraminifera, separating it into 12 distinct genetic types belonging to three main genetic lineages.
Description: Globigerinella calida has a low trochospiral to almost planispiral test, with a wall structure similar to the bulloides -type. It is normal perforate, has round to triradiate spines. Chambers are globular, and ovate during late ontogeny, i.e. the final and penultimate chamber.
The chambers are less involute than are those of young, trochoid Globigerinella siphonifera and the walls are less densely hispid than those of that species. Distribution: In South Pacific sediments, G. calida is found north of Lat. 35° S. in the vicinity of New Zealand, and north of 30° S. farther to the east.
Catalog entries:Globigerina calida, Globigerina calida praecalida Distinguishing features: Parent taxon (Globigerinella): Test initially trochospiral, becoming nearly planispiral; globular to ovate chambers; aperture umbilical; fine spines cover the testThis taxon: Trochospiral coiling & slightly radially elongate chambers
