In 1858, the german biologist Johannes Müller from the University of Berlin first described Acantharia that he originally named “Acanthometren”. He was studying and teaching human physiology but became fascinated by the forms in marine plankton at the end of his carrier.

What is the skeleton of Acantharia?
The skeleton made of strontium sulphate and the fact that certain harbour microalgal endosymbionts make them key planktonic players for the ecology of marine ecosystems. Based on morphological criteria, the current taxonomy of Acantharia was established by W.T. Schewiakoff in 1926, since when no major revision has been undertaken.

Is acanth a clade?
Schewiakoff (1926) observed that Acanthoplegmidae can be found very deep, down to 1000 m, supporting the idea that this family could be represented by the clade Acanth II. Some of the deep acantharian sequences could also be linked to the complex and poorly understood life cycle of Acantharia.

The Acantharea (Acantharia) are a group of radiolarian protozoa, distinguished mainly by their strontium sulfate skeletons. Acantharians are heterotrophic marine microplankton that range in size from about 200 microns in diameter up to several millimeters. Some acantharians have photosynthetic endosymbionts and hence are considered mixotrophs.
