Etymology: Chiloscyllium: cheilos (Gr.), lip, referring to membranous and broad lower lip, presumably of C. plagiosum (proposed without a species); skylion, Greek for dogfish or small shark. ( See ETYFish); punctatum: Latin for spotted, referring to scattering of small blackish spots on young specimens. ( See ETYFish).
Presently, four species of Chiloscyllium are found in Malaysia: Indonesian bamboo shark C. hasseltii Bleeker, 1852; slender bamboo shark C. indicum (Gmelin, 1789); whitespotted bamboo shark C. plagiosum (Bennett, 1830); and brown banded bamboo shark C. punctatum Müller & Henle, 1838.
In past scientific literature, this species has been misidentified as Chiloscyllium plagiosum, Chiloscyllium griseum, and Chiloscyllium hasselti. One synonym, Chiloscyllium margaritiferum Bleeker 1863, has been used in reference to the brownbanded bambooshark.
