Gills are one of the most important osmoregulatory organs for maintaining the salt–water balance. In this study, changes in the gills of velifera ( Poecilia sphenops) acclimated to 20, 30, 40, and 50 ppt of saline in the laboratory were examined histologically and immunohistochemically.
One hundred fifty brood-size veliferas aged 2 years and older supplied by a commercial producer were primarily acclimated for 7 days in 55-L aquariums with 0% salinity (reverse osmosis water) at 25 °C and in water with a pH range of 7.0–8.0. Trial aquariums with a closed circuit sump system, filtration, and water heating were used.
The veliferas holds good scope as a potential ornamental fish species on account of its tolerance to salinity gradients and high demand in market. In the present study, osmoregulatory changes in the gills of velifera exposed to salt stress were investigated histologically and immunohistochemically.
Examination of the physiological and biochemical changes in other organs such as the kidney and digestive tract is very important in determining the specific responses of velifera in its survival against salt stress. All relevant data are within the paper, and those are available at the corresponding author. Not applicable.
