The Ziphiidae represent one of the most speciose families within the Order Cetacea, second only to the Delphinidae. The family currently consists of 21 species in six genera (Mead, 2009). Due to the similarity of their overall external morphology, many ziphiids are difficult to identify to the species level, both at sea and when beach-cast.
