Although the salp Thalia longicauda is common in the southern hemisphere, there is little information on its biology and ecology. Our study aimed to describe the morphology of the development of solitaries and aggregates and to determine the developmental stages, length distribution and population structure of this species.
Thalia longicauda shows clear morphological differences from other Thalia species ( van Soest, 1973) and thus it seems unlikely that a misidentification of T. longicauda was responsible for the close association of this species' ribotype with T. democratica in the 18S phylogeny.
Thalia longicauda showed a high abundance, with solitaries being more frequent (53.76%) than aggregates. This resulted in a low aggregate/solitary ratio ( Table II) in contrast to those reported for blooms of other salp species.
