Etymology: Thunnus: Greek, thynnos = tunna (Ref. 45335). More on author: Bonnaterre . Marine; brackish; pelagic-oceanic; oceanodromous (Ref. 51243 ); depth range 1 - 1602 m, usually 1 - 250 m (Ref. 6390 ). The species name, albacares ("white meat") can also lead to confusion: in English, the albacore ( Thunnus alalunga) is a different species, while yellowfin is officially designated albacore in French and referred to as albacora by Portuguese fishermen.
The experiments were monitored and carried out by authorized staff to minimise animals’ suffering. A total of 400 juvenile T. albacares (size range 27–76 cm) were collected in 2013 and 2014 from ten locations over the entire species distribution (Fig. 1 and Table 1 ).
We are also grateful to all past and present staff involved in the collection and management of tuna fisheries data around the world. The contribution of Julien Barde was instrumental in managing the fisheries data used in the present analysis. Stefano Mariani and Victor Restrepo made useful comments on an earlier version of the manuscript.
