Digital Object Identifier (DOI) A DOI is a “digital identifier of an object,” , not an identifier of a digital object—that is, DOIs can be assigned to any object, whether physical or digital. DOIs serve as “unique, permanent numbers assigned to specific objects, which remain unchanged” .
DOIs are persistent unique identifiers designed for research objects, such as articles, books and book chapters, conference proceedings, data sets, etc. The DOI system is designed to identify objects wherever they are located on the web, unlike a URL which points to a specific location on the web which may change or disappear over time.
A DOI is created to resolve to the URL of a resource on the web; if that URL changes, the DOI shall be modified to point to the new URL, thus assuring the "stability" of the DOI in any citation, to take a reader/user to the same digital object regardless of where it may have moved on the web from its original location.
It was developed in the late 1990s, and implemented in the early 2000s, primarily and originally for articles in scholarly journals. For some examples of the use of DOIs in citing sources, see How to Use the New DOI Format in APA Style; and for more details on the DOI infrastructure, the Key Facts on the Digital Object Identifier System .)
