The bivalve family Ostreidae, commonly known as oyster, is the only one molluscan group employing chalky calcite as a shell layer [21,22,23]. The chalky layer, an autapomorphy of oysters, is distinct from the vesicular microstructure in Gryphaeidae, the sister family of Ostreidae [ 24 ].
