    Remarks: Leucandra serrata is widely distributed along the Brazilian coast. Azevedo and Klautau ( 2007) described this species for Angra dos Reis (Bonfim Island), southwestern Brazil, and later, it was reported to the Northeastern coast (Muricy et al. 2008; Lanna et al. 2009 ), several thousand kilometers far.
    Leucandra serrata was known in natural substrates since its original description (Azevedo and Klautau 2007 ). Regarding the descriptions of the specimens of L. serrata and B. trispinata, we observed variations in the size and shape of spicules (see Results).

    Ascandra alba sp. nov. differs from all the other Ascandra due to its skeletal composition: two categories of triactines, three categories of tetractines and trichoxeas. Along the Brazilian coast, the genus had been represented by Ascandra atlantica (Thacker, 1908) and Ascandra ascandroides (Borojevic, 1971 ).
