Keywords: Actinioidea, Anthozoa, Intertidal, Integrative taxonomy, Southeast Asia Sea anemones (Cnidaria, Actiniaria) are a cosmopolitan group of marine invertebrates, occupying a diverse range of habitats globally, extending from the tropical shallow seas to deep oceanic trenches (Gomes et al. 2016).
Actinernus is a genus of deep-sea anemones currently represented by six species distributed in the Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean [ 20 – 23 ]. However, molecular data in this genus is scarce.
The deep-sea anemone Actinernus sp. individuals were collected from the Haima cold seep in the South China Sea at a depth of 1386 m ( figure 1 a ), where Actinernus sp. was commonly observed on the shells of the deep-sea clam Archivesica marissinica around cold-seep mussel beds [ 20, 25, 26 ].
Actinarians exhibit great variety in shape and habit. The cylindrical body may be thick and short or long and slender. The oral disk, containing the mouth, at the upper end of the body is surrounded by petal-like tentacles, which are often present in multiples of six.
