It is likely that this result is a combination of two factors: the choice of the outgroup (order Dictyoceratida) and the use of molecular clock analysis to co-infer phylogeny. Dictyoceratida are known to form an extremely long branch on the demosponge phylogenetic tree [ 26 ], which likely attracts other longer branches to the base of the tree.
