Mustelus asterias is currently classed as lower risk/least concern on the IUCN Red List of threatened species, largely because of the apparent increase in abundance in the NE Atlantic. However, in the Mediterranean, they are considered vulnerable and are probably locally extinct in several areas ( Ellis, 2000; Serena, 2005 ).
Despite this, survey data suggest that Mustelus spp. abundance has increased in recent years in the Bristol Channel, the Celtic Sea, and the North Sea and that it has remained stable in the Irish Sea ( ICES, 2007 ).
One positive aspect of work on the genus is that Mustelus spp. have been proven to support sustainable fisheries through the enforcement of strict management measures, based on sound scientific knowledge of life history, population structure, and movement patterns of the species in question ( Walker, 1998 ).
Mustelus spp. have been reported to be locally extinct or depleted in many parts of the Mediterranean Sea where they were previously considered abundant, including the Gulf of Lions, the upper Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Adriatic Sea ( Aldebert, 1997; Jukic-Peladic et al ., 2001; Ferretti et al ., 2005 ).
