    Charybdis feriata, the crucifix crab, is a species of swimming crab in the family Portunidae. It is found in the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific region. This crab grows to a width of about 20 cm (8 in). The body is fan-shaped and the carapace is smooth, with some granular transverse lines.
    The Indo-Pacific portunid crab Charybdis feriata (Linnaeus, 1758) was recorded for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea, based on a single adult female caught in a gillnet off Barcelona at a depth of 60-70 m on the 13th December 2004. Its most probable introduction vector was a merchant ship. Charybdis feriata (Linnaeus, 1758).
    The closer haplotype is a COI sequence of a specimen from Australia (MN 184690), with differences in two positions (99.68 % similarity), ranging between 98.65 to 97.30 % of similarity (seven to 14 mutations) with respect to the rest of 60 haplotypes for this species in Genbank. Charybdis feriata (Linnaeus, 1758) in GBIF Secretariat (2023).
    The genus Charybdis (De Haan, 1833) is an important group in family Portunidae. For a long time, the taxonomic status of this genus has remained controversial. Several studies have recommended to classify it into subfamily Portuninae of family Portunidae 14, 15, 16.
