Metanephrops challengeri is traditionally included in the thomsoni group but it differs from all the other species of the genus in having a much longer rostrum and with the dorsal post-cervical ridge (or thoracic median carina in Tshudy et al., 2007) smooth except for a pair of anterior spines.
Although the genus Nephrops has been considered as closest to Metanephrops morphologically, molecular data indicated that these two genera are widely disparate ( Tam and Kornfield, 1998, Tshudy et al., in press ). Thus, Nephrops is not used as an outgroup for this molecular work.
Most members of Metanephrops occur in the Indo-West Pacific, and no species (including fossil) has been found in eastern Australia, East Atlantic, and central or eastern Pacific.
The molecular analysis shows that the southernmost distributed extant species M. challengeri is one of the basal species of the genus. This concurs with the southern high latitude hypothesis of the origin of Metanephrops proposed by Feldmann, 1989, Feldmann et al., 1993 and Tshudy et al. (2007).
