The Podocopida are an order of ostracods in the subclass Podocopa. It is the most diverse of the five orders of ostracods, and the only one with freshwater species. The group also has a rich fossil record. The superfamily Cytheroidea in the suborder Cytherocopina consist of non-swimming crawlers and burrowers.

With 10 superfamilies, the Podocopida have undergone the most extensive ostracod radiations. Being originally marine, they have invaded freshwater and terrestrial habitats multiple times ( Martens and Horne, 2009 ), and many taxa have changed from sexual to asexual reproduction independently ( Chaplin et al., 1994 ).
The Order Podocopida, at present, contains three superfamilies (see Table 30.1) with nonmarine species. The Superfamily Cypridoidea contains close to 75% of all living nonmarine species, and the families Candonidae, Cyprididae, Notodromadidae, and Ilyocyprididae.
