Lytechinus variegatus represents a dominant species in many of the seagrass meadows throughout these regions. As a ruderal species, L. variegatus has rapid growth, early reproductive maturity, and short longevity. These characteristics make L. variegatus a potential candidate for fisheries and/or aquaculture.
For example, in the central gulf coast of Florida A. punctulata consumes mainly animals while Lytechinus variegatus depletes the algal resources ( Cobb and Lawrence, 2005 ). Moreover, both species may occupy different microhabitats, with A. punctulata abundant on hard substrata and L. variegatus usually abundant on sand ( Hill and Lawrence, 2003 ).
Lytechinus species are dominant in many habitats. The ecological role is primarily known for L. variegatus. L. variegatus has rapid growth, early reproductive maturity, and short longevity, characteristics of a species with a ruderal life-history strategy. Whether these characteristics occur in the other species of the genus is not known.
As a ruderal species, L. variegatus has rapid growth, early reproductive maturity, and short longevity. These characteristics make L. variegatus a potential candidate for fisheries and/or aquaculture. In the laboratory, juvenile and adult L. variegatus readily consume formulated diets and produce large gonads within several months.
