Gammarus wilkitzkii, G. salinus, and G. locusta are sister species, and their clade was separated from a cluster comprising G. duebeni and G. troglophilus (1.00 PP, 93% BP). In the Lysianassidae lineage, Onisimus nanseni and O. glacialis are sister species, with a clade of Menigrates obtusifrons (1.00 PP, 98% BP).
In the Svalbard region, these authors demonstrated that A. glacialis was found in Atlantic Water both during summer and winter. Gammarus wilkitzkii is an autochthonous sympagic species, which is known to spend all of its life cycle in association with sea ice ( Melnikov, 1997 ).
The decline mainly involved Gammarus wilkitzkii coinciding with the disappearance of much of the multiyear sea ice, which is an important habitat for this long-lived species. Benthic amphipods were most diverse, and also showed a decline over the time-span. They had higher abundance closer to land where they are associated with landfast ice.
Gammarus wilkitzkii was positively related to distance from land and depth, because as a species with a multiyear life cycle it is associated with older ice which is generally found in drift ice off-shore ( Lønne and Gulliksen, 1991a; Hop et al., 2000 ).
