Saccopharynx ampullaceus is pelagic in the North Atlantic and grows up through metamorphosis from a rounded-type leptocephalus (Nielsen and Bertelsen 1985; Nelson 2006 ). Here, we describe the gross and microscopic morphology of the aglomerular kidney of S. ampullaceus and discuss its functional significance.
Saccopharynx ampullaceus has a slender body covered with black-brown, soft, loose skin with no scales (Fig. 1 a). The head is small with tiny eyes and an extremely large mouth. The urinary pore is located ventrally at the rear of the triangular shaped abdominal pouch. The peritoneal membrane is black-brown in the preserved specimen.
Like other saccopharyngiforms, these fish have large mouths and long, slender bodies with long tails that have a bioluminescent organ at the tip. The function of this organ is currently unknown. Saccopharynx ampullaceus lacks a traditional gas-filled swim bladder, presumably due to the pressures at the depths they live in.
