    The contribution of D. sacculus to DSP outbreaks in the Galician Northern Rías should not be underestimated. Dinophysis sacculus ( Stein, 1883) is a dinophysoid dinoflagellate included in the so-called ‘ Dinophysis acuminata complex’ together with D. acuminata, Dinophysis ovum and other middle-sized, oval-suboval shaped species of Dinophysis.

    It is widely distributed in tropical and warm-temperate waters, and occasionally found in colder areas [ 174] transported by warm-water currents, such as in the Norwegian Sea [ 175 ], but has never been cited as the causative agent of DSP events when it was the only or the overwhelmingly dominant species of Dinophysis in the microphytoplankton.
