    Metanephrops neptunus, which is considered as the most derived species in the morphological analysis, is not grouped with the other species of the arafurensis group but rather shown to be one of the basal species (i.e., with M. challengeri) in the 16S rRNA gene tree ( Fig. 1 ).
    The molecular analysis shows that the southernmost distributed extant species M. challengeri is one of the basal species of the genus. This concurs with the southern high latitude hypothesis of the origin of Metanephrops proposed by Feldmann, 1989, Feldmann et al., 1993 and Tshudy et al. (2007).
    Most members of Metanephrops occur in the Indo-West Pacific, and no species (including fossil) has been found in eastern Australia, East Atlantic, and central or eastern Pacific.
    Jenkins (1972) believed that the genus Metanephrops originated in the Indo-West Pacific, with the arafurensis and japonicus groups older than the two other groups.
