Although the number of species has probably increased since then, Aguado et al. ( 2012) already recognized that, within Syllidae, the subfamily Syllinae has about 260 species distributed among 20 genera of which Syllis Savigny in Lamarck, 1818 and Typosyllis Langerhans, 1879 have the highest number of described species.
The evolution of reproduction and brooding systems of Syllidae was considered at length by Aguado and San Martín (2009 and references therein). There have been several previous phylogenetic analyses of Syllidae, some including relatively few terminals ( Nygren, 1999; Nygren and Sundberg, 2003 ).
Syllidae, commonly known as the necklace worms, is a family of small to medium-sized polychaete worms. Syllids are distinguished from other polychaetes by the presence of a muscular region of the anterior digestive tract known as the proventricle. Syllid worms range in size from 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 in) to 14 centimetres (5.5 in).
