The Indo-Pacific portunid crab Charybdis feriata (Linnaeus, 1758) was recorded for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea, based on a single adult female caught in a gillnet off Barcelona at a depth of 60-70 m on the 13th December 2004. Its most probable introduction vector was a merchant ship. Charybdis feriata (Linnaeus, 1758).
The median-joining network of 33 haplotypes of complete COI gene sequence of Charybdis feriata. XM, Xiamen locality; HN, Hainan locality; ZS, Zhoushan locality. This study first described the complete mitochondrial genome of C. feriata, which was 15,660 bp in length, including a typical set of 37 genes and a control region.
Charybdis feriata inhabits shallow water, on both rocks and sandy bottoms. Mating takes place between a hard-shelled male crab and a soft-shelled, freshly-moulted female crab. The male takes up a guarding "cradle" position before the female moults, straddling her and gripping her with his ambulatory legs.
